Outdoor learning for children

Why forest school?

Research shows that children are stimulated by the outdoors. By taking part in Forest Schools children typically experience, over time, an increase in; self belief, confidence, learning capacity and enthusiasm, as well as communication, aptitude for problem-solving and emotional wellbeing too!

Activities are designed to cater for the many varied learning styles, needs, schemas and interests. Forest School Leader Jude carefully assesses learners throughout a program and learning opportunities are adapted to offer a progression in skills and development.

Tree Climbing
Toasting Marshmallows
Fire lighting – Den building
and much more!

Be Free Forest School is fantastic and I can't recommend it enough. It's torn my son away from his Nintendo and introduced him to the outdoors better than I ever could.

It's new activities every time so it never gets boring. I like learning how to make things from the stuff we find on trees and in the grass and I've made plenty of new friends too.

Children will spend the entire one hour session outdoors, come rain or shine. For your child to enjoy their session they must be warm and dry. Please provide your child with the following:

    • Wellies
    • Warm Socks. Extra pair for cold weather
    • Long trousers (thick tracksuit bottoms are ideal)
    • Long-sleeved top (2-3 layers for cold weather)
    • Hat (sun or winter)
    • Gloves/scarf for colder days
    • Names on clothes
    • A spare set of trousers, long sleeved top and socks with a plastic bag for dirty clothes to go home in.

Please use old clothes and let your child know that at Forest School they CAN GET DIRTY and you don’t mind!

WE will provide waterproof suits so that children can play outdoors whatever the weather. They will wear these for each Forest School session.

We’ll share photos from sessions weekly on our Facebook page and in our Newsletters too! Assessment (of the EYFS) will happen regularly and will be included in your child’s learning records, to be shared with parents periodically. Forest School sessions reflect the outstanding teaching and learning which already happens in Arlesdene Nursery.

“The future will belong to the nature-smart: those individuals, families, businesses, and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.”
